How to Avoid Prescription Overpayment

In Virginia, many patients overpay for some of their prescriptions. Want to know how to avoid overpayment – just ask!

This year Virginia passed anti-gag clause law that allows a pharmacist or pharmacy to provide to an enrollee information on the amount of the enrollee’s cost share for the enrollee’s prescription drug and the clinical efficacy of a more affordable alternative drug if one is available.

The new law also allows the pharmacist to disclose the cash price the enrollee would pay for the prescription drug if the enrollee purchased the prescription drug without using the enrollee’s health plan.

Patients often aren’t told they could pay less without using insurance unless they ask. If you don’t ask, you’re not going to get the information you need to make an informed decision at the pharmacy counter.
